Six educators all busted on misconduct charges

Date Posted: 2006-12-28

A principal, a vice principal and four teachers have all fallen from grace with the Prefecture Board of Education.

A vice principal resigned his post after being arrested for drunk driving, while three elementary school teachers were suspended for similar infractions. The Prefecture Board of Education says the vice principal had been drinking beer and five glasses of awamori at his home in early December before going to bed at 7pm. He later in the evening drank another five glasses of awamori before again sleeping at 1am. While on his way to work at 6:45am, he was stopped by police and arrested for driving while drunk.

A teacher based in northern Okinawa was suspended for four months by the education board after he was caught in the act of assault and trespass. Officials say he was observed assaulting a woman acquaintance. He has been given a warning by officials for stalking the woman.

In yet another case, the principal of a Miyako junior high school has been found guilty of inappropriate actions with a student and had his pay cut over a three-month period. The principal was charged with inflicting an injury to a studentís left arm during a physical education class. Officials say the principal inappropriately punished a bully during the class.
