Kadena Air Show may be in trouble

Date Posted: 2004-08-27

After being shot down by restrictions stemming from the September 11th terrorism incident three years ago, Kadena Air Base “America Fest” may be brought to the ground again.

The show is now scheduled for September 15th, featuring a U.S. military aero acrobatics show, at Kadena. The base’s 18th Wing is getting pressure to cancel the air show, if not the event itself, because of fallout from the August 13th crash of a Marine Corps CH-53D Sea Stallion helicopter near Futenma Marine Corps Air Station in Ginowan..

“While our relationship of trust with the base may be damaged by our actions, we have no choice,” says Kadena Town Mayor Atsusume Miyago, “but I think this year they should stop the air show. Many people are so much afraid of an accident. I’m going to require that they stop the air show.”

Chatan Town’s mayor was more cautious, saying “we’ll carefully discuss it and then decide what to say.” Together with the Chatan mayor, the group met Monday to decide which courses of action to pursue.

Earlier this month, before the helicopter crash, the mayors had appealed to the Kadena authorities to exercise implementation of thorough safety measures for the air show, which calls for acrobatics to take place in skies over Kadena.
