Prefecture taking bid-rigging contractors to district court

Date Posted: 2009-11-19

A full year after discovering more than 170 contractors had been rigging their bids in order to get contracts with Okinawa Prefecture, and after months of negotiations and mediation to get the companies to voluntarily repay the prefecture, government officials are turning to the courts for legal action.

Okinawa Prefecture has met with the Assembly at its November business meeting and explained plans for taking the bid-rigging companies to court to recoup Prefecture monies paid out. The Prefecture has sent invoices totaling ¥10 billion to the 170 companies, but payments have not been received from any of the companies.

The District Court will be asked to take legal action against each of the construction companies. The Prefecture is asking the court to order each company to reimburse Okinawa Prefecture with compensation for all monies illegally earned.
