Professor's exhibition opens Saturday at Gallery LafayetteDate Posted: 2009-11-12    He’s also an artist, and his latest exhibition is set to open Saturday at Gallery Lafayette here in Okinawa. Many of his latest creations were done this year, including Noro, Nocturne-Katsuren and Blood Altar. Kofas describes his works as “being about Spiritual issues: the Temporal and the Eternal.” He says there are two major ideologies in the art world today, with one concerning itself only with the physical world. That element, which includes modernist art philosophy, “exists within limited perimeters and has no greater purpose.” The second ideology aligns itself with spiritual issues “and the relationship which exists between the Physical and the Spiritual”. He says “my work attempts to explore issues regarding the interrelationship existing between the physical and spiritual realms, and attempts to present various components of the Spiritual.” The 52-year-old Greek-born teacher-artist has had exhibitions at Gallery Atos and the Okiten Fine Arts Exhibition in Japan in the past several years. Kofas holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Sciencedegree from Indiana University. He has been teaching with the University of Maryland since 2002. His other exhibitions have been in Brunssum, Holland, Germany, Istanbul and in the United States Gallery Lafayette is located next to Ichibankan Shopping Mall near Chuo Park Avenue in Okinawa City.
