Community thanked for role in Philippines storms reliefDate Posted: 2009-10-29 ![]() ![]() Relief efforts in the aftermath of Tropical Storms Ketsana and Ondoy attracted volunteer participants from across Okinawa, gathering up supplies and getting them packed in a short, 16-day period. The 6,000 pounds collected have been transported to the Philippines by the U.S. Marines’ 1st Marine Aircraft Wing stationed at Futenma Marine Corps Air Station in Ginowan City. Miko Liggau, who served as coordinator for the Tropical Storms Ketsana and Onroy Relief Operations September 28th through October 18th praised Okinawa for its “generous contribution of meeting the needs of flood victims in the Philippines,” and asked everyone “Please accept our heartfelt gratitude.” Liggau called it a true community effort, noting it is hard to even identify all the supporters and contributors. Of note were American Engineering Company’s heavy transportation assets to MCAS Futenma’s hangar, where goods were readied for shipment to Clark AFB in the Philippines, Okuma Beach Recreation Services, the Philippine Consulate General and Okinawa Central Hospital for linens, blankets and hospital needs, Print 21 and Japan Update for getting the word out island-wide about the relief efforts, and Fad Tech Sales and Services for offering office space. Liggau said “the long hours put in by all should make you proud of how members of each community unite for a great cause.” Liggau underscored efforts by the Okinawa DoDEA Teachers and Administrators, Yomitan, Koza, Maehara and Oroku Catholic Communities, Camps Foster, Futenma and Lester Chapels, Camp Kinser Dental Clinic, Uroko Next Door Café, Kadena Housing, CFAOR,k NAVFAC, ROICC, Tokuyama A & E, Kadena and Butler Facilities Engineers, Filipino Community in the Ryukyu Islands, Association of Filipino-Japanese Nationals, and Filipino-American Association.
