Movie in making excites Taketomi Island residentsDate Posted: 2003-07-11 Taketomi is best known for being the one location where the traditional Ryukyu-style village atmosphere is preserved to this day, as it was largely spared from the destruction of the war. The Japanese Government has designated the whole island as a Preserve of Important Traditional Buildings. The producers of the movie wanted to find a local youth from Taketomi to play the role of the hero. Most of the extras also hail from the island, and every resident of the tiny community of some 270 is looking forward to the release of the movie that is scheduled for March 2004. Ichiro Kita, the producer of the movie, says that he is very excited about the spirit of the island and its residents. “I have yet to see a location in my life that could rival Taketomi in the beauty of its nature, friendliness and warm hospitality of the people, and smell and sounds of the nature. Everything here is like a dream,” Kita said. Taketomi’s best-known personalities, the music group “Begin” that is currently on the top of the Japanese music charts and whose members come from the island, will also appear.
